Open air preaching - how to start your pitch

Quick Tips: Keep in mind that for thousands of years, men and woman have used the same 5-basic step to effectively communicate. I have used these 5-steps to effectively teach hundreds of people who to communicate and idea or to sell various products or services. If you want to effective communicate a point or idea, the best format you can follow are the following five steps. These aren’t anything I invented or just thought up. They are in fact they same five steps Jesus used over and over to communicate His ideas, thoughts and commands with people.

Step 1. Introduction
The first step in effective communication of ideas, thoughts, products or services is an introduction. You need to let people know who you are and why you’re there. You always want to start with a basic introduction. Below is a suggestion of a quick and effective introduction.

Hello, my name is (your name) and I want you to give me just 5-minutes of your time today. I came out here today to share a very important and life changing message with all of you. By nature, I’m normally very shy and don’t like to speak in public especial in front of a bunch of strangers. But what I have to share with you is so important, I decided to set aside my fears and speak with all you so that you too may benefit from the message I want to share with you today.

Step 2. Interest/Probing
The second step in effective communication is what’s called the interest or probing stage. Here, you want to ask question that either help you to find out more about the people or questions that will create interest in the product, idea or service your about to present to the people. You always want to ask question that will get the person who’s listening interest. You always want to ask questions that create curiosity, desire and/or interest in what you’re doing, saying, selling or offering. It’s always best to keep the questions quick and simple yet thought provoking. Below is a suggestion of a question you can ask to build interest.

Have you ever thought about why we die? More importantly have you ever wondered what will happen to you after we die? Maybe we live forever? Maybe we’re reincarnated? Maybe, there is a God and he loves everyone so much we will go to heaven? Maybe, nothing happens and we’re just worm dirt? What do you think happens?

Step 3. The Presentation
The third step in effective communication is what’s called the presentation. Here, you want to present your ideas, thoughts, product or service. At this point you want to use analogies, that illustrate the point you’re trying to make. This is also where you introduce information or facts that support your ideas. Below is only a suggestion of how to present the Gospel. Feel free to think and pray about what you feel you need or want top say and substitute that for the dialog below.

The bible says it’s appointed unto men to die once, and then comes judgment. So, according to the bible after you die, you will stand before God to give an account of everything you’ve ever said done, thought or felt.  Just like this court has a standard that the will use to judge you with, God also has a standard; it’s called the Ten Commandments. Do you consider yourself to be a good person?  Let’s look at God’s standard to see if that’s true. Have you ever told a lie?  If you have by definition, that makes you a liar.  One of the commandments is “you shall not steal”.  Have you ever taken something that didn’t belong to you?  If you have, by definition, that makes you a thief.  Another commandment says, “You shall not use the God’s name in vain. Have you ever used God’s name as a cuss word? If you have used God’s name in vain that’s called blasphemy and the bible says God won’t hold them guiltless who takes His name in Vain. One of the commandments is, “You shall not commit adultery” but Jesus said that anybody who looks lustfully at some one else has committed adultery in their heart.  Have you ever looked with lust?  If you have said yes to those four questions, you are a lying, thieving, blasphemous adulterer at heart and you have to face God on Judgment Day.

The Bible states that God commands all people everywhere to turn away from their sin, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness. Perhaps you think that because God is good and therefore he will overlook your sin on Judgment Day.  But if today in court you’re found guilty and said to the judge, “Judge, I know that I am guilty, but I believe that you are a good man and will therefore overlook my crimes and let me go free”, What do you think the judge will say? It is a sad fact that the very thing many people are hoping will save them on Judgment Day - God’s ‘goodness’ is the very thing that will condemn them.  If God is good & just, He must punish all those who sin against Him and hell will be their dreadful fate.

Step-3 / Part -2 of the presentation:
Consider this for a moment.  Would you sell your eyes for a millions dollars? I’ve never met a sane person who would take that offer. Why not, because your eyes are priceless to you and you’d have to be crazy to trade them for money. But, if your eyes are only the windows for your soul to look out of and your eyes are that valuable, how much more valuable should your soul be worth to you? The good news is this. That God loves us so much, that He does not want us to suffer the consequences of our sin and disobedience toward Him, and be sentenced to an eternal death in hell. So he made a way for you to be forgiven and saved from this eternal death. Let’s say today while you’re in court, you were found guilty of breaking three very serious laws. The judge gives you a million dollar fine that you can’t pay. Now since you can’t pay your fine, he gives you a life sentence. Just as they’re hauling you off  to serve your life sentence when all of a sudden out of nowhere, some guy you never met before steps into the courtroom and says, “Judge, wait!” “I sold everything I own and gave everything I had to raise the money to pay their fine.” The Judge looks at you and says, “You’re free to go.” “Justice has been served and your fine has been paid so therefore the I’m setting you free.” The court accepts the money and declares that you are free to go. The law has been satisfied, your debt has been paid in full, and the stranger’s sacrifice was a demonstration of his love for you. At that moment you have a choice, you can turn back to the judge and say, “No thanks, I’m just going to do my time” or you could fall to the feet of the guy that paid your fine and thank him. Which would you do?
That’s essentially what God did for you 2000 years ago. The Bible says that the God of the Universe became a man (Jesus Christ), and suffered and died on the cross for your sins and mine so that we could be set free. It's as simple as this—we broke the Law, and Jesus paid our fine. "God demonstrated His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8) "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, being made a curse for us." (Galatians 3:13) Do you see God’s great love for you? Do you see your need for His forgiveness? Do what He commands and “Repent…that your sins may be wiped out and times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” (Acts 3:19)

Step-4 Closing:
A closing is simply what it sounds like. It’s where you summarize the message and ask for action. It’s the time where you ask people to make a choice or a decision. Below is an example of a close. Feel free to change it to something your comfortable with. The important thing is to summarize and than ask a couple of questions that call for action.

So you may be asking yourself, “How do I get this gift of forgiveness and receive God’s grace?” First, you must turn away from sin and turn to God. Confess and forsake your sins, and surrender your life to the only one who can save you. Jesus died to set you free, and then he rose from death to be your Lord. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” If you will confess and forsake your sins (repent) and trust in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord, God will forgive you and you’ll pass from death to life. What does it mean to "put your faith in Jesus Christ?" It means to personally trust in Jesus the same way you’d trust in a parachute if you had to jump 25,000 feet out of an airplane. You wouldn’t just "believe" in the parachute; you would put it on! In the same way, the Bible says, "Put on the Lord Jesus Christ..." and you will be saved. There are millions of people who "believe" Jesus exists . . . but they have not put on the Savior—there’s a BIG difference. And the difference will be obvious when you “jump” though the door of death. Don’t delay, get right with God today for there’s no tomorrow promised to any of us! With all your heart—turn away from sins, and surrender your life to Jesus Christ. Please don’t put it off till later. You may die today and then it will be too late. You may not yet have all the answers to your questions, but better to put on the parachute first and then ask questions, then to pass through the door unprepared, grasping for the parachute when it’s too late. You can pray something like this—"Dear God, today I turn from all my sins (name them), and I put my trust in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Please forgive me, and grant me your gift of everlasting life. Amen." There is nothing magic about these words—it is the attitude of your heart that God cares about. God will transform you from the inside out. You will think and feel differently as you learn to trust and obey Him. God will give you new strength to live right and love Him above all else. Read your Bible daily and obey His Word. You can trust God—He loves you and will always be faithful.

Step-5 Post Close:
A Post Close is when you give all the information after the close. In this case it’s when you would offer people an opportunity to give their lives to Christ. All too often, we people who use the law fail to give people the chance to be made right. This is also the time when you might want to inform people who you are and how to get in touch with you after you’ve finished preaching. In other words it can also be the time you fellowship with your listeners.

So, if you know you’re headed for hell and want to be made right, step forward and commit your life to Christ today. God’s not in to your words he’s in to your heart so come forward and poor your heart out to God. Tell him you’re sorry for the crimes you’ve committed against Him and then, fall to the feet of the man who paid your fine. Ask Jesus to wash you clean of your sins and invite him to come into your heart and be the Lord of your life. Come forward right now!
